Shigeru Kimura Shukokai Karate
South Africa – after 50+ years of practising Shukokai karate under the Kimura Shukokai banner, it was time to implement Shu-Ha-Ri.
The Shu-Ha-Ri model, originating from Japanese martial arts, describes three stages of skill acquisition: Shu (obey/follow), Ha (detach/break), and Ri (transcend/create). It represents a journey from strictly following fundamental rules to mastering a skill by breaking conventions and eventually transcending them.
During this time, Chris Ensil Hansi not only won the world karate championships, but became known Internationally as a Master coach having served as the National coach for the governing body in South Africa.
So, in January 2026, after much contemplation – together with many loyal students – the Shigeru Kimura's Shukokai Karate organisation came into being.
The formation of a new organisation in January 2026 has taken off. Already interest has been shown from several dojo abroad and as we are busy developing our infra-structure and moving forward, we will keep everyone informed of our progress.
